Equipment and materials for testing the content of digital data carriers
As part of Module 5 of the project entitled „Specialized training as an opportunity to increase effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in the fight against organised crime” equipment and materials for testing the content of digital data carriers were purchased for the Forensic Laboratory of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Bydgoszcz. The computer lab has been equipped with: microscopes, cameras, UFS/eMMC/eMCP NuProg-E programmers, monitor, soldering stations, adapters and other service equipment for data reading.
IT research laboratories perform research on the content of digital data carriers, including mobile phones, for Police units in Poland as well as law enforcement agencies, prosecutor’s offices and courts. Smartphones are currently the most abundant source of evidence that enables effective identification and crime fighting, especially cross-border crime, human trafficking and cybercrime. The number of phones sent to the research is constantly growing. Their security level is also increasing. These devices are often secured with codes, gestures, encryption or intentionally damaged by users. In order to read the data in such cases, highly specialized knowledge is required, which is hardly available in common circulation. Despite having technically advanced equipment, it is necessary to have extensive knowledge related to the methods of reading data from mobile phones and recovering data from various types of memory.
The purchased materials and equipment used in the work will allow the laboratory experts to:
- bypassing security measures used in mobile phones,
- reading data from NAND, eMMC, eMMCP, UFS after disassembly from the phone,
- reading data from physically damaged mobile phones.
The equipment and materials were financed with the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and a state budget within the „Internal Affairs” Program. The programme is under supervision of the Interior and Administration Ministry.
In the following years 2022/2023, experts from the Forensic Laboratory will participate in a series of trainings on methods of data recovery from mobile devices and their analysis. Issues related to a digital information processing are constantly being modified and it is necessary to continually expand the possessed knowledge and skills, also in relation to the devices operated by experts.
